MIRTAS – Music Instrument Retail Apprenticeship Scheme for 16 – 19 year-olds
You could become a music instrument retail specialist. The MIRTAS project is operated by the Academy of Music and Sound (AMS) – the UK’s leading music education and training provider, which creates successful career paths for aspiring young musicians. We are a national company with centres in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Gateshead, Glasgow, Hitchin, Purfleet, Southampton and Swindon, offering full and part-time education and training courses in guitar, drums, bass, vocals, music tech and the professional music business.
Where Will I Work?
If you have ever aspired to working in the music retail business, this exciting opportunity is just for you. It provides real world work based experience, within one of England’s many leading musical instrument retails stores. In addition to this invaluable experience you will simultaneously be working towards specific music instrument retail qualifications both in Btec Music Instrument Retail Knowledge and NVQ Music Instrument Retail Skills. If you have good product knowledge and good inter-personal skills, then you will already have a good footing for your apprenticeship. Ideally you will already have GCSEs in Maths, English and ICT.
The skills and experience gained from your apprenticeship will open up opportunities for you to help in pursuing your chosen career path, whether that is in, Music Retail, Music Distribution, Manufacturing etc.
An increasing number of employers are choosing employees with vocational training and experience. For example, starting a career with your local music instrument retailer could develop, through the help of your vocational training, to becoming anything from a retail sales specialist to: assistant manager, in-store product demonstrator, product specialist, sales representative or even perhaps a show and events co-ordinator along with many other opportunities.
You will commence your pre-apprenticeship training for a minimum of 1 month at 1 day per week. On completion of your pre-apprenticeship, the 1 year apprenticeship will begin. (optional 2nd year at level 3) You will work towards your Btec Music Instrument Retail qualifications which have been specifically designed for this industry.
This bespoke training includes both in-store and remote learning via the AMS Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
The apprenticeship programme:
- An initial 1 month pre-apprenticeship where you will work towards a BTEC Level 2 Award in work Skills for Effective Learning and Employment (QCF)
- 12 month apprenticeship where you will work towards an Btec level 2 and 3 qualification in, i) Music Instrument Retail Knowledge and ii) NVQ Music Instrument Retail Skills
- Further 12 month advanced apprenticeship at level 3. Btec Level 3 Retail Knowledge and Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills
