After the event they uploaded their youtube footage including ‘Apply some pressure’ by Maximo Park – they then got a tweet from Paul Smith the lead singer of the band praising them for their version!

Freshers Fayre 2013

Freshers Fayre

Despite the terrible weather, we managed to pull some great, enthusiastic crowds in for the North Herts College Freshers Fayre. Year 2 band “Four Piece” brightened the mood of everyone with some funky, crunchy covers of Robbie Williams and Don Broco songs.

It was a great opportunity for new freshers and students to witness work in progress within the academy and a really productive way to kick off the new year!

LPWs now regularly on Youtube

AMS Hitchin Students can now monitor their LPW progress throughout the year via the Academy’s Youtube and Facebook pages.

Each week, Live Performance Workshops will be added to Hitchins Facebook pages which give students a chance to look at their performance on stage, their confidence and their interaction within their bands.

Videos contain animation slides which give the clips a professional element and inform the watcher of who is in the band and what song is being played!

Carlos Hercules beats some rhythm into AMS HITCHIN!!

Carlos Hercules, professional session drummer who played the London 2012 Olympic Games ceremonies, drummed with Anastacia, George Michael and Liberty X came to AMS Hitchin on Friday 6th September to deliver a brilliant masterclass!

Carlos kicked off the new academic year in style by giving AMS freshers a chance to ask questions, hear how to make it in the industry and see some awe inspiring drum techniques.

“Carlos has played prestigious events such as The American music awards and the UK hall of fame, Breast cancer and Aids awareness,  and various charitable events and was the first drummer to play at the New Wembley Stadium.

He has attracted articles in both Rhythm and Modern Drummer Magazine.”

Quote sourced from http://carloshercules.com/, Carlos’ professional website.

Carlos gave great tips for our new students such as encouraging them to practice at least 5 hours a day, being prepared prior to gigs and performances and just being committed to what you are passionate about. He also spoke about how difficult life can be when you are always on the road but you always have the support of the ones around you. This was a fantastic occasion and we cannot thank Marcus enough for the time and effort he put in to this masterclass!

Carlos will now tour to Italy for 5 weeks before returning to England.

Brilliant evening at singer/songwriter course launch!

Well what an evening we had on Wednesday evening! Sandi Thom came to visit the Hitchin Academy site and gave us a fantastic taste of the talent she has on offer.  Bruce Findlay, former manager of Simple Minds got many people buzzing with his stories of meeting people such as Nelson Mandela, John Lennon & Jimi Hendrix and also got many people laughing with his colourful Scottish language and wit.

The evening began with a Q & A session with Sandi, where students both present and prospective had the chance to ask Sandi how she made it to the top and what it was like having a number one hit with ” I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker”. She gave tips and advice on the effort, determination and hard work thats required in order to be a success and having a fully working car big enough to fit a drum kit in!

There was a student performance by Hitchins very own Kyren -Kyra and Renville who played some beautiful choppy rhythms blended with dynamic vocals to get the audiences ear drums tingling in anticipation for Sandis performance which did not disappoint one bit!

Playing a 12 string guitar, Sandi blew everyone a way with lovely chord patterns, melodic phrasing and vocal harmonies which soothed and inspired those watching.

We hope that Sandi has influenced many young musicians keen to make it in the industry and we cannot thank her enough for giving the youth of today the chance to witness a professional musician at work and witness her rise to stardom.

Nathan Curran of Basement Jaxx at Hitchin AMS!

Monday 24th June saw Nathan Curran, drummer of Basementt Jaxx come to AMS Hitchin to give a fantastic Masterclass on drum recording techniques and how essential playing with a click is if you want to be a professional session musician.

Students took turns to play along with a track brought along by Nathan and asked him questions about he made it in the industry. A very intuitive session and a great learning experience!

We welcome Nathan again to AMS where we hope to learn more from him!
