For those of you who missed out on our open events this year, don’t worry, as we will be running both tasters days and open evenings again in the new year!
On the 25th of February we will be holding another taster day. During this event, you will have the chance to attend a Music Careers presentation, where we will discuss the courses available at The Academy of Music and Sound and the possible career paths within the music industry, along with workshops ranging from Guitar Techniques, Vocal Ensemble, Songwriting and Recording Techniques. At the end the day there will also be short performances from a number of our current students and staff.In addition to our Taster Day, we will be running opening evenings on the 15th of March, 12th of April and 17th of May . These events will run from 6pm at our centre in the Grassmarket and will give individuals the opportunity to have a look around the centre, meet our staff and ask any questions about our courses.
To top that, everyone who attends an open evening is entitled to a free audition voucher (value £15).

Higher Education is more than just a course at the Academy of Music and Sound
Higher Education at the Academy of Music and Sound is your stepping stone to a career in the music industry. We understand that musicians need to be highly trained in a range of skills and being top notch on your instrument is just the start!To support our Higher Education students, we have developed a pionenering enrichment program.
Higher Education Courses
This course is designed for musicians who want to improve their instrumental skills while working on stagecraft, performance and rehearsal skills. You will have the opportunity to work with a range of musicians developing you communication skills and network of professional contacts.
To support your vocational skills, you will also develop entrepreneurial and creative skills, helping you to get your freelance career off the ground.
On this course, aspiring producers will have the opportunity to develop skills to work with artists in the studio or work on your own EDM creations in our iMac suites. If you choose to study as a studio producer, you will work on recording, mixing and mastering. If you choose to study on our EDM pathway, you will develop your skills in live midi implementation and triggering, audio loops and sequencing. In addition to these creative skills, you will also work on entrepreneurial skills and teaching skills, helping you to develop a sustainable freelance career.
In our Scottish centres, you will have the opportunity to study HNC and HND courses. These courses are for musicians who want to develop their instrumental and performance skills while also receiving teaching on a range of skills that the modern musician will need. You will develop teaching, creative, entrepreneurial and analytical skills, readying you for further study or your freelance career.
Once you have completed your Foundation Degree or HND, you can embark on our BA(hons) Performance Industries Top Up in 1 year. Through a variery of exciting projects, you can develop your musicianship, sound recording, composition and songwriting skills. You will have an enormous amount of creative autonomy and freedom to tailor your degree to suit your needs.
If you’ve been working in the music industry as a professional, but don’t have a Foundation Degree or HND qualification you may still be able to fast track directly to the BA(hons) Performance Industries Top Up through the process of Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) Please contact your local centre for more information.

Our industry led masterclasses will provide you with specific training and connections with top class practitioners. Previous masterclasses have been delivered by Nat Power, Newton Faulkner, PRS for Music, Bumblefoot, Vintage Trouble, Musicians Union, Futureheads and many more!
Our industry mentor scheme will connect you with dedicated professionals who will offer help and advice. Your mentors will be available throughout your time on the course and for 6 months after you graduate to really help you get your career off the ground.

Tour & Showcase
At the end of your first year on the Foundation Degree in Music Performance, you will be taken on a tour bus to a showcase event within the UK. You will showcase your talents at a gig with students from across the UK. After the gig, you will spend the night on the tour bus as you’re taken home.
Music Performance students will be given delegate passes to Liverpool Sound City where you can network with the who’s who of the UK music industry.
Creative Music Production students will have the opportunity to attend Sonar in Barcelona.

The Academy of Music and Sound has a strong history of preparing students for rigours of the modern music industry. We are conscious that this is a rapidly changing industry we’re preparing our students for and so we can’t stand still when it comes to our student experience. Our Foundation Degree courses in Music and Creative Music Production and BA (hons) in Performance Industries are constantly reviewed, evaluated and updated in light of changes in the industry. However today, your degree is only part of the story when it comes to your education, modern musicians needs to be incredibly skilled on their instrument, or in their discipline. However, they also need to be experienced and connected. In response to this, we have developed a brand new, comprehensive enrichment program. All Higher Education students will have exclusive access to this program;

- Roy Harter: New York based Emmy award-winning, composer, sound designer and audio mixer, best known for his work in television and film. He is also a multi-instrumentalist for various performing and recording artists. Roy is the founder and owner of the post-production facility SkinnyMan, located in New York City.
- Glen Brady: Based in California, Glen Brady is a music producer & audio engineer. He writes and produces music which has been used by on TV networks such as CBS, Fox Sports, MTV, CW Network and Sky Sports. Glen specializes in analogue synth systems, modular synths and drum machines.
- Simon Efemey: A record producer, noted for his work with Napalm Death, Paradise Lost, Obituary, Amorphis, Deceased & The Wildhearts. Simon also works mixing live sound for The Wonder Stuff, Jesus Jones, Napalm Death, Diamond Head, Orson & Obituary.
- Rick McMurray: Founding member of Alternative Rock band Ash, Rick has toured the world as a drummer. Rick has extensive experience of the live and record industry, working professionally since the early 90s!
- Plus many more, covering all aspects of the music industry!

Our Foundation Degrees are available in our Birmingham, Exeter, Gateshead, Swindon and Southampton centres and our BA (hons) course is available in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Gateshead, Birmingham, Swindon, Southampton and Exeter.
